The Leeds and Liverpool Canal is a historic waterway in North West England, stretching 127 miles (204 km) and connecting the cities of Leeds and Liverpool. Spanning the Pennines, the canal's main route features 91 locks and is complemented by several smaller branches. In the early 21st century, a new link was added, connecting the canal directly to Liverpool's dock system. Historically, this section served as a crucial transport route between Liverpool’s bustling docks and the industrial heartland of the region. Notably, the Tate and Lyle sugar refinery once dominated this area until its closure in 1981, making way for the award-winning Eldonian Village development.
